Coaching

Why Coach?

To look after the players, to help them grow as people as well as players. To help them enjoy their games and season, as well as keep them involved in the game for life. To stay involved in the game or be involved in your child's sport. To gain confidence in yourself. Each individual has their own reasons, and the joy is absolutely worth it.

What is Coaching?

Teaching teamwork, building cohesion, developing communication, teaching technical skills and tactical knowledge, but mainly supporting the social and emotional development of the people in your team. The pillars of coaching are very similar to the pillars of te whare tapa wha - social, emotional, mental and physical. To me, coaching is building Hauora (health). What is coaching to you? Add it to the news.

Who can Coach?

Anyone over the age of 14 (officially). But with the right support, anyone can coach - aiming to coach players generally younger than them. You may have a lot more skills than you realise, and there are an abundance of resources to support the development of coaches at every level.

When do you Coach?

That depends on which leagues and tournaments you choose to take part in. There are Football and Futsal coaching opportunities most days of the week for most weeks of the year.

Where do you Coach?

Again, that depends on which leagues or tournaments you choose to take part in. Some leagues are quite local, others involve regular travel around the Wellington region.

How do I start Coaching?

Contact your club's coach coordinator or junior coordinator. They are usually very happy to have extra hands, and may have an opportunity such as junior coach at a hub (one venue) which would give you loads of nearby support, or an assistant coach role where you can learn off a more experienced coach. If you are a parent of multiple children, then you know how to coach already.

Explanation

There are multiple entry points, depending on your goals, and Level 1 is highly recommended. OFC is Oceania Football Confederation, who lead NZF - New Zealand Football, who in turn lead Capital Football, who look after all of our local leagues and clubs.
