Programmes

A Football and goalie gloves laying on grass.

Leagues / Competitions

These are usually weekly, and can last for one or two school terms in junior grades. The Winter season (focused on Football) lasts for term 2 and 3 for junior players, and April - August for senior players. The Summer season (focused on Futsal) lasts for term 4 or term 1 - most leagues are re-enrol for each. The Summer season is also ideal for trying twilight Football (2, 3, 5, 6 or 7 a side). This is relatively social and an ideal entry point for someone who has never played before.

School holiday programmes

These vary greatly between clubs as to how much Football time there is or how much skill may be needed. Essentially these are focused on fun for kids and can be aimed at ages 5-14yrs depending on which programme you are looking at. A few clubs have combined to offer something bigger and better.

TDP / Academy

Talent Development programmes (TDP) and academies are aimed at highly skilled and advanced players - or those who aspire to be. For more information check out the Capital Football website.

Tournaments

There are many tournaments of varying nature. With a list of what is on in each city under construction. If you know of a tournament in the Wellington region that is not currently in our calendar, please let us know.

After School programmes

These can be focused on fun and entertainment for unskilled or skilled players. There are usually wide age ranges in attendance, but the kids know each other very quickly.

One off / give it a go day

For girls and women who have never been involved in Football, this is a brief introduction, designed to stimulate interest in trying something else (signing up). These are usually free, and sometimes include freebies. Definitely step out with confidence and try these.

Skills centres

These are an introduction to Football, ideal for new players and building the fundamental technical skills. Age ranges 9-12yrs, and the ideal scenario would be to run something similar for new adult players soon as well.

  • All-female environments allowing young girls to be themselves in an environment they feel safe and comfortable within
  • Continuing to improve their core skills which will improve their confidence in their football/futsal
  • An environment allowing girls to try new things and learn through making mistakes
  • Providing more opportunities for female coaches that will help create role models for female players
  • Helping young girls to see confidence, leadership and accomplishment in other women
  • Helping young girls to be empowered to be positive role models for one another.

Girls vs mixed

In junior grades as well as Summer Football senior women's, there is the option to play girls only leagues or mixed. Which one is best will depend on the individual. In the youngest ages mixed is as good as anything, and when you move closer to puberty girls only may be a good option to try. Many girls play in both and experience something different in each one. They may be able to be more confident in girls only, or focus more on Football success in mixed. Consider the social/emotional as well as physical when deciding on which is right for you or your player.

Dispensations

Dispensations are applied for by the club to Capital Football. They allow players to play in different grades to their age (for a variety of reasons). Girls can play down one grade up until they reach 14th grade, and 16yr old girls can play down two grades (to 14th grade) if they are not ready for senior Women's Football or the girls 18th grade. Please have a chat to your grade coordinator, since these parameters can change, and coordinators have experience in who needs dispensation and how the process works.
